Nevada INBRE Project Prepares for Renewal
In July, the NV INBRE submitted a proposal requesting continuing funding of the project ($2.5 million per year in direct costs plus approximately $1.5 million per year in indirect costs) from 2010 through 2015. The proposal was developed by Dr. James Kenyon at the University of Nevada School of Medicine (the Principal Investigator and Director of the NV INBRE) and Dr. Carl Reiber at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (Project Coordinator) in collaboration with faculty and administrators at each of the INBRE partner institutions. These institutions include Great Basin College in Elko and Nevada State College in Henderson as new partners in the NV INBRE. The goals for the proposed funding period are to develop further the research base and capacity at Nevada biomedical research and teaching institutions with targeted hires of new researchers and by providing research and mentoring support to faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students.
The proposal describes enlarged and enhanced mentoring and research programs for undergraduate students at all NSHE institutions. In addition, important new areas of research development are proposed in translational and clinical research and development of community engagement projects. These efforts will be carried out in collaboration with the University of California at Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) that houses extensive resources and expertise in clinical research. Making these resources available to Nevada scientists will enable them to compete more effectively for NIH and other funding. Lastly, the NV INBRE will expand research opportunities across partner western states of New Mexico, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Hawaii by jointly funding Collaborative Interstate Seed Grants, Undergraduate Student Interstate Research Opportunities, Regional Scientific and Programmatic Meetings, and a Regional Resource Exchange.
