Geothermal Education

With the rise of renewable energy both here and abroad, educational programs have been developed to train workers and researchers in geothermal, solar, wind, and other renewable technologies.  The University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College, and National Geothermal Academy offer curricula that emphasize these important new fields.

1.  The National Geothermal Academy offers an intensive 8 week summer program covering all aspects of geothemal energy resource development and utilization. The Academy is intended for juniors or seniors or post-baccalaureate students in scientific and engineering programs. Overview

2.  The Great Basin Center for Geothermal Energy offers a graduate geothermal research fellowship opportunity for qualified geoscience and engineering students. The Fellowship award provides tuition support, health insurance, and an annual stipend of $26,000 for living expenses for pursuit of full-time graduate study and thesis/dissertation research.

3. The University of Nevada, Reno offers an Interdisciplinary Renewable Energy Minor open to all students. There are two tracks available: Track 1 for engineering majors to add an alternative energy specialization and Track 2 for non-engineers. Both tracks will teach students about the economic, social, and technical issues of the renewable energy field.

4. Truckee Meadows Community College offers a Construction Technologies Associate of Applied Science Degree. It provides the needed training for renewable energy professionals. Additional non-credit seminars and workshops will help workers upgrade and maintain the skills required for this field.
