Important Things To Do

First Semester

  • All students should meet with their advisors to complete the Program of Study form, which you must fill out online from the Graduate School. This must be filed with the Graduate School before applying for graduation, preferably during the first year. The Program of Study form lists your Advisory Committee: your advisor, another Music faculty member, and a faculty member from outside the department.
  • Master of Music in Performance students should meet with their advisors to schedule the first year recital. During this time, students should also select their graduate committee which should include two Departmental faculty members and one university faculty member. Be sure to view the Graduate Recital Policies.

Second Semester

  • Renew your application for scholarships and Graduate Teaching Assistantships for the second year by February 1.
  • M. A. and M. M. Music Education students should meet with your advisor to plan and discuss your thesis / final project.

Third Semester

  • First week of classes, all students should arrange a consultation with their advisor.
  • Performance students should set their second year recital date.
  • M. A. and M. M. Music Education students should meet with their advisor to discuss the details and progress of their thesis / final project.

Fourth Semester

  • Comprehensive Exam - ALL masters students must register for MUS 795 in the semester of graduation. The exam requirements are different according to the degree pursued:
  • M. A. Music Education: The comprehensive exam is a written exam. Candidates also complete an oral examination related to the candidate’s final thesis as well as the degree program course work. M. A. candidates should consult with your advisor about completion of your thesis. Once the thesis is complete, set a date with your Advisory Committee for the oral exam.
  • M. M. Music Education: The comprehensive exam is a written exam. Candidates also complete an oral examination related to the candidate’s final project as well as the degree program course work. M. M. candidates should consult with your advisor about completion of your final project. Once the final project is complete, set a date with your Advisory Committee for the oral exam.
  • M. M. Performance: The comprehensive exam is determined by the applied instructor. Candidates also complete an oral examination based on the content of the candidate's final recital. After the final recital is completed, set a date with your Advisory Committee for the oral exam.
  • M. M. Composition: The comprehensive exam is determined by the applied instructor. Candidates also complete an oral examination based on the content of the candidate's final portfolio.

    After the final portfolio is completed, set a date with your Advisory Committee for the oral exam.
  • Notice of Completion of Program: Bring the "Master's Degree - Notice of Completion" form to the oral examination.  Once the orals are passed and the committee has signed the form, get the signature of the department chair as "Graduate Director" and submit it to the Graduate School prior to their deadline date.
  • Recital Programs and Recordings: Students must submit two copies of degree recital programs and an audio or video recording to the Department of Music office for its archives. They are not to be submitted to the Graduate School.

 

Practice Rooms

Practice rooms are strictly available to music majors or students enrolled in music classes on a priority-need basis. Visit the Department Office to get your access code. Practice room scheduling occurs at the beginning of each semester. Eating, drinking, and smoking are strictly prohibited in the practice rooms. The Department reserves the right to rescind practice room privileges from any individual.

Official Departmental Forms & Fees

There are departmental forms that need to be submitted, including the Practice Room Key Form, the Student Recital Scheduling Form, the Graduate Teaching Assistantship / Scholarship Form, Nightingale Concert Hall Reservation Forms, Non-Required Recital Scheduling Forms, and others. Fees are associated with some of these forms.

Music Clubs & Organizations

There are several ways to connect with fellow melomaniacs at UNR. There are local student chapters of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the national music fraternity for men, Sigma Alpha Iota, the national music fraternity for women, the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the national professional organization which focuses especially on the choral arts, and the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC), with its focus on Music Education. General Information About the Master of Music Degree

  • Program Length: The usual length of the degree program is two years (four semesters).
  • Maximum Length: The maximum number of years allowed to complete the Master of Music degree is six years (twelve semesters).
  • Graduate Special:  This classification is for students who wish to take graduate courses but do not plan to pursue an advanced degree program, or for students who do not yet meet requirements for graduate standing.  Up to nine credits of graduate special standing may be applied toward a formal degree program.
  • Transfer Credits: No more than nine credits, transferred or taken at UNR as a graduate special, may be counted toward your degree once you are formally admitted to a masters degree program.
  • Maintaining graduate standing: Until graduation, all graduate students enrolled in degree programs must register for at least three credits each semester; otherwise, an "Application for Leave of Absence" form must be filed with the Graduate School.
  • Ensemble requirement:  All students must complete at least two credits of coached or conducted ensemble.
  • Applied music (individual lessons):  All Performance students must complete four credits of 700- level applied lessons; Music Education students, two credits.  Composition majors substitute four credits of MUS 609 for 700-level applied lessons.
